Keys to achieving an eco-friendly home

casa eficiente Iris Global
Perhaps you are thinking of renovating your home because you want to adapt it to a new situation or because you simply need to modernise or renovate the installations. If this is the case, it might interest you to know the benefits of considering this renovation to make your home more ecological and sustainable.

The first and most environmentally friendly benefit is the reduction in energy that you will achieve if you make your home environmentally friendly. In order to achieve these energy savings, there are three aspects on which it is necessary to work: Insulate the property, use sustainable materials, and install a sustainable air-conditioning system.

Home insulation with sustainable materials

Thermal insulation injected into wall cavities

This is the quickest and easiest thermal insulation system to install. This consists of making a series of perforations on the inside or outside face of the façade of the property through which the thermal insulation is injected with a special hose.

As the injection is done by means of small perforations, it is not possible to check that the insulation has been done properly. Therefore, it is advisable to use cellulose fibre instead of polyurethane foam.

If this method is used to insulate the façade, thermographic photographs should be taken after the insulation has been injected to check that no areas have been left uncovered by thermal insulation and that there are no thermal bridges.

Interior thermal insulation, wall cladding

This type of insulation is advisable if you are planning to carry out a complete renovation of the whole property. The installation of thermal insulation by means of wall cladding usually consists of attaching insulating panels (cellulose panels, cork, rock wool, etc.) to the façade, which are then covered by a layer of plasterboard, wood panels, or brick to conceal them.

Exterior Thermal Insulation Composite System (ETICS)

This type of insulation is installed throughout the entire façade of the building or property, so it is recommended whenever the problem affects the entire building and the whole community of neighbours agrees to carry the installation out, or in single-family homes.

This involves the incorporation of insulating panels on the entire exterior surface of the façade of the building or property. These insulating panels are then coated with different types of finish, such as single-layer mortar or stone cladding.

Replacement of windows with others that better insulate from the outside cold or hot temperatures.

A lot of heat can be lost through the windows in winter. Good quality and well-maintained windows ensure airtightness and adequate thermal insulation, pursuant to the suitable glazing chosen depending on the orientation of the property and the appropriate profiling.

This influences the temperature in your home, but it will also save you money on your bill because you won't waste heat and energy on air conditioning when you use it in the summer.

Another benefit of well-insulated windows is that they protect us from outside noise. Windows incorporating systems such as double or triple glazing with an air chamber are particularly insulating.

Work on air-conditioning systems, both for heating and cooling.

In relation to heating and the most ecological and sustainable systems that exist, it is worth mentioning the following:

  • Pellet stoves. They heat up to 150 m2.
  • Double-fired cookers. They also benefit from the heat of the smoke.
  • Fireplaces with an insertable cassette are the most efficient.
  • If you are going to build your own home, ceramic accumulators only need 12 kg of wood per day.
  • Solar-powered underfloor heating is the cleanest one.
